Asbestos Awareness Course

Posted at 11:14 AM on January 29, 2010

What is asbestos and why is it a problem?

Large amounts of asbestos were used in new and refurbished buildings before 2000. Usage began to decline in the 1970s and blue asbestos (crocidolite) had a voluntary ban in 1970. Blue and brown (amosite) asbestos were banned by law in 1985. Uses of white asbestos (chrysotile) were banned in1999. Everything else, and most second hand supply (except for very high performance materials) was banned by 2000.

A large number of premises still contain some form of asbestos. Workers most likely to come into contact with asbestos-containing products are those in the construction, maintenance, refurbishment and related trades.

When asbestos materials are damaged or disturbed they can release dangerous fibers which, if breathed in, can cause serious diseases. Around 4000 people in Great Britain die every year from asbestos related diseases making asbestos the single greatest cause of work related deaths.

CTS is proud to support the "send2some1cold" Campaign.

Best Western Hotels has teamed up with Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity, to help keep families snug and secure this winter.

A decent home is something many of us take for granted. But hundreds of thousands of people in Britain are trapped in housing that’s cold, damp, or squalid.

It's early days but with the severe weather of this winter our timing is perfect. It’s the coldest winter in around 100 years according to the news and so if you care ‘send2some1cold’.

Working With Schools

Under the “Every Child Matters” agenda it is very important that schools offer  full range of opportunities to explore vocational training as an option in years 10 and 11 and indeed in some cases years 12 and 13.

The Key to the success of vocational training and delivery is working in partnership with existing local private or voluntary sector providers. CTS are on such provider already extremely Successfull in the delivery of vocational training either in school or at their fully functional workshop and class room facility in Norwich. CTS offer a curriculum that is flexible and a cost effective solution to external training. Courses include all those accepted onthe 96 list plus

additional courses to suit the need of industry upon leaving school, these include BTECs, City & Guilds and Diplomas.

CTS already has established links with several schools in the region, they include Bungay High School and Sprowston High School to name but a few, the sucess rate has been extremely high with over 90% of the class achieving their individual learning aim and going on to full  apprenticeships in construction or further training.

CTS also offers a free careers taster session for schools wishing to find out more about the construction industry or wanting to sample the types of courses on offer for years 10 and 11.

Developing and embedding access to extended services is a long term agenda, this is about putting in place services that will last and provide continual benefits to young adults and children, services should become sustainable long into the future.
